Grey Highlands is looking into reducing the speed limit on all municipal roads in Eugenia to 40 kilometres an hour.
Council received a couple of recommendations during its meeting on June 21, from the Road Safety Community Partnership Committee.
The recommendations included the reduction of speed in Eugenia and advocating the provincial government to install school bus stop arm cameras.
Deputy Mayor Dane Nielsen says the topic around reducing the speed limit in Eugenia is not new to council and says there is a cost associated with changing the signage in the area.
Instead, he proposed receiving a report on adjusting the speed limit before moving ahead, which was approved by Council.
The recommendation to advocate for the placement of cameras on school buses to identify drivers passing buses while the lights are flashing comes following similar motions being considered in other municipalities.
Council Joel Loughead, says the recommendation brought to Grey Highlands is to support the idea of requesting stop arm cameras as well as have their own correspondence with the Ontario government.
“The idea is solidarity with other municipalities advocating for this,” says Loughead.
Grey Highlands approved urging the provincial government to require all school buses have stop arm cameras installed and paid for by the province for the start of the 2023-24 school year. A copy of the recommendation will be sent to the Bluewater District School Board, Grey County Warden Brian Milne, and Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Rick Byers.
