The Port Elgin Legion is seeing the return of community donations following a decline during the pandemic.
Legion Branch 340 President Bob Harrison says with the pandemic over, they are getting better but continue to struggle looking for volunteers to assist with events they use the make money for the organization.
He adds with a lack of funds coming in, they were not able to donate to the local hospital.
“When we donate money it is usually from bingo Wednesday nights, we make money on that, we do meat draws on Saturdays, we do barbecues on Fridays sometimes, and this all generates money which we donate back, so with no one coming in, it was pretty hard to generate the money,” says Harrison.
Harrison says on June 16, however, Food Basics gave a $10,000 donation to the organization.
Harrison says they plan on putting the funds in the bank and will continue efforts to donate to the hospital, Lamont Sports Park, Pee Wee hockey, and other local organizations.
“We don’t have a particular goal but annually we donate about $30,000,” says Harrison.
Harrison encourages people who are interested in donating the legion to visit their building at 630 Green Street in Port Elgin and drop off a cheque.
