Over $600,000 was spent by West Grey in analyzing policing models when they were previously considering switching law enforcement providers.
During a recent meeting, council received a report from CAO Laura Johnston outlining the total costs accumulated following a process which started in 2021, when municipal staff were directed to request costing from the OPP for the provision of policing services in West Grey.
The process ended in January of this year when council voted to retain West Grey Police.
Mayor Kevin Eccles says the police costing exercise cost the municipality around $600,000.
“That is using a very conservative number for staff hours on supplying facts and figures for the consults to make their projections on ongoing costs,” Eccles says in an email.
Dollars spent on consultants ($80,000) and a $297,000 expense for another architectural firm for the construction of the new West Grey Police building also contributed to the $600,000 figure for the police service analysis.
Coun. Doug Townsend thanked staff for bringing forward the report.
“It gives the community a good indication of what this whole process is costing the municipality,” says Townsend.
