Huron-Bruce Conservative MP Ben Lobb’s Private Member’s Bill to exempt on-farm use of propane and natural gas from the carbon tax has passed third reading.
On Wednesday, the House of Commons voted on Bill C-234, An Act To Amend The Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, which was adopted with 176 votes in favour and 145 against.
The Bill will now head to the Senate for debate and review.
Lobb says in a statement, “I am grateful to my colleagues for their support of this important piece of legislation as well as the numerous agricultural producer and grower associations and others who provided valuable input at the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food.”
A release from Lobb office says the bill will save thousands of dollars for Canadian farmers that rely on these fuels every day for their essential operations.
Lobb’s release says, “The Conservative Party of Canada understands that farmers put food on our tables and shouldn’t be financially punished for doing so. Unlike the Liberal Government, we recognize that farmers are some of the best stewards of the land and environment and proactively contribute to climate protection initiatives in their business practices.”
Lobb says, “I look forward to working with my colleague the Honourable David Wells, Senator for Newfoundland and Labrador, who will be sponsoring the Bill as it goes through the Senate. Canadian farmers are counting on the support of senators to ensure Bill C-234 comes into effect.”
