Huron-Kinloss has awarded a contract for the rehabilitation of a bridge near Lurgan Beach.
The revamp of Bell Bridge — located on Lake Range Drive between Concession 4 and Bell Drive — will require a complete closure of all lanes for 12 weeks this spring and summer.
The project will include repairs of supporting structures, the top deck and drainage improvements to extend the life of the bridge, a release from the Township of Huron-Kinloss explains.
Several options for construction were reviewed by Huron-Kinloss council. They decided to pursue full bridge closure as it offered the lowest cost and shortest duration.
Two tenders were received with the lowest bid coming in at $950,000. Huron-Kinloss council awarded the project to AJN Builders Inc. at its meeting on March 20.
The bridge construction project is scheduled to begin on May 1 and continue until July 31, weather permitting.
“Full closure of the bridge will require a north detour from Concession 4 to Concession 8 via Highway 21,” a release from Huron-Kinloss explains. “The Township understands that this will be an inconvenience for many residents and visitors.”
About 1,400 vehicles cross the bridge daily during the summer months.
Bell Bridge was built in 1963. It had some minor maintenance work completed in 2011 to clean and recoat the steel railings.
