West Grey council is receiving a proposal for an off leash dog park in Durham by the local Lions Club this week.
In a meeting set for Feb. 7, council will be receiving a delegation from West Grey Durham Lions Club President Jim Aitken and Vice-President Ed McGowan following a letter received by the municipality on Jan. 26.
The letter says the club is proposing the dog park to be situated on town property on Saddler Street West on the south side.
“There are community gardens in that lot now but they could be easily moved to the lot across the road or up by the arena. The reason we have chosen this spot it is easily accessible for walking to or driving, with lots of parking,” says the letter.
The letter adds the club believes having this dog park will also assist in cutting down on canine waste in local parks, school yards, recreational areas, and streets. It adds the park should also have a supply of bags available and garbage for people to dispose of the waste.
The letter says the park would also divided into sections for smaller and larger dogs.
“We have had a lot of interest and good comments about this from the residents of Durham and surrounding area,” says the letter.
Council will be receiving this delegation during its meeting on Feb. 7 at 9 a.m.
