The County of Huron will be implementing fees for anyone who wants to charge their electric vehicles.
Derry Wallis, who is the county’s Climate Change and Energy Specialist, gave a presentation to council regarding user fees for the 22 new electric vehicle charging stations across the county.
In her presentation, she pointed out that in some other places, EVC use may be free of charge or around $2 per hour, perhaps to incentivize people to switch to electric.
She also mentioned that, in order to prevent the county subsidizing the operating costs and maintenance of the charging stations, the county would need to charge more.
For the cost of maintenance, the county would need to charge $3.15 per hour, but it was recommended that a fee of $5 be implemented for the EVCs, so that further development could be funded for more charging stations in the future.
The $5 hourly fee was approved by county councillors.
