Despite plenty of opportunities, the Owen Sound Attack just couldn’t break through on the power play.
Kirill Kudryavtsev scored what stood as the game-winner on a short-handed breakaway just over three minutes into the third period, as the Soo Greyhounds cruised past the Owen Sound Attack 5-3 in Ontario Hockey League action Sunday afternoon at GFL Memorial Gardens.
Andrew Gibson, Ethan Montroy, Kalvyn Watson and Jordan D’Intino also scored for the Greyhounds (8-10-4-4) who won their second straight game.
Matthew Papais, Colby Barlow and Ethan Burroughs tallied for Owen Sound.
The Attack (16-8-1-1) finished 2-1 on their road trip through Barrie, Sudbury and Sault Ste Marie – having their five-game point-streak snapped in Sunday’s loss.
There was some history made for Owen Sound in the game though.
Colby Barlow scored with 14 seconds left on the clock in the third period – extending his goal-scoring streak to 10-games.
It serves as the new unofficial record for longest goal-scoring streak in Owen Sound franchise history. Barlow’s nine-game run entering Sunday tied Kyle McAllister, who scored in nine straight games during the 2000-01 OHL season for the Attack. That streak started on Dec. 30, 2000 and ended on Jan. 26, 2001.
It’s Barlow’s bar now at 10-games straight with a goal and counting.
Montroy got things going for Soo at 4:33 of the first period. He took a pass in the high slot and quickly fired a low shot towards the net that found a way under Nick Chenard to give the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead.
The Attack tied it with about five minutes left in the first. Papais entered the offensive zone and made a deke around a Greyhounds defender to create himself some space, then fired a wrist shot past the glove of Samuel Ivanov.
D’Intino restored Soo’s lead just past the midway mark of the second, taking a pass a few steps outside the crease and quickly batting it past Chenard to make it 2-1.
Eight minutes later the Greyhounds went up 3-1. Gibson skated down the right board and fired a shot towards the net that deflected off Papais on its way past Chenard.
That two-goal lead was short-lived. Moments after being stopped on a 2-on-1, Burroughs was sprung on a breakaway and made no mistake with a shot on the glove side that cut Soo’s lead to 3-2 with 40 seconds left in the second period.
Owen Sound then had three straight power plays to start the third. They couldn’t get anything done, and actually conceded a short-handed marker to Kudryavtsev at 3:39 to make it 4-2.
The Greyhounds took a three-goal with with Watson’s power play marker at 17:14.
Barlow’s goal came with 14 seconds left on the clock to bring the Attack within two.
Ivanov made 27 saves in the win, while Chenard stopped 25 taking the loss. Owen Sound and Soo each had 30 shots in the game.
The Attack finished 0 for 7 on the power play; Soo went 1 for 2.
Owen Sound’s next game is Friday, Dec. 9 on the road at Guleph.
