A newly elected councillor in Georgian Bluffs is stepping down prior to the start of the new term.
Mike Smith has announced his resignation due to health reasons, according to a statement from the township. He received the third-most votes (1,963) among council candidates in last month’s municipal election.
“I truly appreciate the support I received from the community during my campaign. I believe sitting on council is an important job, and unfortunately I’m not able to dedicate the time and energy needed at this time. I will continue to advocate for my family, friends and neighbours here in Georgian Bluffs, and I wish the new and returning council members all the best in their upcoming term,” Smith says.
The inaugural meeting for Georgian Bluffs council is set to be held on Wednesday. Sue Carleton, who served as deputy mayor during the 2018-22 term, will be sworn-in as the new mayor of Georgian Bluffs at the meeting.
Township councillors are expected to discuss the process of filling the vacancy left by Smith next week at their Nov. 22 meeting.
