It was a tough Tuesday night trip to Kitchener for the Owen Sound Attack.
Joseph Serpa led the way with four points and Mitchell Martin added a goal and two assists, as the Kitchener Rangers thumped the Attack 7-1 in Ontario Hockey League action at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium.
Kitchener (6-7-0-0) has now won back-to-back games, while the Attack (9-6-0-0) have dropped two straight.
Simon Motew, Filip Mesar, Jesse Fishman, Matthew Sop and Carson Rehkopf also scored for Kitchener, which led 3-1 after two periods before breaking the game open in the third.
Martin scored a goal right off the opening faceoff of the third to spark the Rangers, breaking down the left-wing and firing a shot on net that deflected off an Attack defender past Corbin Votary to make it 4-1 just 10 seconds into the period.
Cedrick Guindon scored the lone goal for Owen Sound. It came short-handed with five minutes left in the second period, cutting Kitchener’s lead to 2-1 at the time. Mesar scored just 30 seconds later on the power play to restore the Rangers’ two-goal advantage.
Guindon’s shorthanded goal came just moments after the Attack had a would-be goal by Colby Barlow disallowed after a video review. The officials determined after a lengthy look that Barlow was offside entering the zone. It was a close call, and difficult to see clearly if Owen Sound’s captain was indeed a step ahead of the pass from Deni Goure.
Marco Constantini made 27 saves in the win, while Votary stopped 32 taking the loss. Kitchener outshot Owen Sound 39-28 while going 3 for 6 on the power play; the Attack finished 0 for 2.
Owen Sound is right back in action Wednesday night in a home game against the Sarnia Sting at the Bayshore. Game time is 7 p.m.
