Several incumbent mayors were defeated across Grey Bruce in Monday’s municipal elections.
Janice Jackson, current Bruce County warden, lost the mayoral race in South Bruce Peninsula. Garry Michi will be the town’s next mayor. He received 52.1 per cent support (2,853 votes).
Grey County’s current warden Selwyn Hicks went down in defeat in Hanover’s deputy mayor race. Warren Dickert earned 300 more votes than Hicks to become Hanover’s next deputy mayor.
In Georgian Bluffs, incumbent Dwight Burley was defeated by Sue Carleton, who served as deputy mayor during the 2018-22 term in the township. Carleton received 47.6 per cent of the vote.
West Grey incumbent mayor Christine Robinson lost to a former mayor. Kevin Eccles received more than 46 per cent of the votes in the municipality. He served as mayor in the 2014-18 term, and lost to Robinson in the 2018 municipal election. Voters in West Grey flipped support again in this election cycle.
Owen Sound voted in a new deputy mayor. Longtime councillor Scott Greig defeated incumbent Brian O’Leary.
In South Bruce, incumbent Robert Buckle lost his bid to return as mayor. Mark Goetz garnered 45.4 per cent of the vote to win the race.
Gerry Glover finished out the term as Mayor of Kincardine but ran for deputy mayor in the 2022 election. He was defeated by Andrea Clarke.
Kenneth Craig was elected as Kincardine’s mayor (2,776 votes).
While mayors were acclaimed in Saugeen Shores and Arran-Elderslie, voters chose change for their deputy mayors. Don Matheson and Mark Davis were defeated.
Diane Huber is the new deputy mayor for Saugeen Shores, and Jennifer Christie is for Arran-Elderslie.
