1) Why are you running?
When I moved to Southgate I heard a lot of complaints about Lystek – so I joined the Public Advisory Committee to learn more about it. When my kids wanted to play hockey, I learned the entire Executive had abandoned the association – so I joined. When I had questions about what was happening at the school my kids attended – I joined the School Community Council. In the eight years I have lived in Southgate I have heard far more complaints about the actions of council than compliments. I am running for Councillor of Southgate because I believe our council must be representative of those it serves. I believe in the principles of open government and look forward to the opportunity to work collaboratively with all members of Council to see our Community Action Plan Goals achieved. I share the community calls for new business and jobs throughout the Township, affordable and attainable housing, and the revitalization of downtown Dundalk. I support continued development of and investment in recreational, youth and senior programs that are accessible to everyone. I am excited for the future of Southgate and all who call it home, and it would be a great privilege to serve as Councillor.
2) Are there any steps municipalities can take to help ease cost of living concerns?
Affordable, attainable, and subsidized housing will help to ease the cost of living for residents. Attracting more business to the Township will employ more residents locally and cut down on the expenses of commuting. Expanding natural gas and internet services will cut down home and business costs for those in the rural parts of Southgate.
3) What are your ideas for economic development in your municipality?
As a community we need to support existing businesses while the municipality works on attracting new ones. We need to ensure that commercial properties are sold with a plan in place to be developed in a timely manner instead of purchased and held without any development.
4) Do you think a municipality has a role to play in the recruitment and retention of physicians and other healthcare workers?
Absolutely. Continuing to make Southgate a wonderful place to live and work will help attract and keep healthcare workers. As we grow and expand facilities within the County, I don’t see why Southgate wouldn’t be a top destination for physicians and other healthcare workers to set up shop.
5) What issue do you believe is a top priority for Southgate to tackle during the next term?
I believe our hard services are at the top of the list of priorities for residents of Southgate. Roads, water and wastewater, fire and police services investments increase safety and improve quality of life and economic opportunities for families and businesses in the Township of Southgate.
