1) Why are you running?
I Kym Hutcheon, am running for re-election after completing two previous terms on Council. I am passionate about this community having chosen it over Toronto almost 25 years ago. I lived in Walkerton for many years but now own and operate the historic Chepstow Inn which I saved from demolition 9 years ago. I now have both urban and rural experience in Brockton.
2) Are there any steps municipalities can take to help ease cost of living concerns?
Currently, Brockton has seen many plans for new subdivisions. We have ensured these include multi unit rental buildings or one level housing units. We will continue to push affordable housing but this is a loose term. We as Council have been trying to expand some of our hamlets and will continue to pressure upper government for permission.
3) What are your ideas for economic development in your municipality?
Brockton continues to offer land for development in our Business Park. We have seen many varied businesses build in East Ridge and with them bring jobs. Our downtown Walkerton core is thriving. With the creation of our new parkette with a donation from the Wong Family, we will host many special events to support the local businesses.
4) Do you think the municipality has a role to play in the recruitment and retention of physicians and other healthcare workers?
Brockton has supported The Doctor Recruitment and Retention Committee along with South Bruce Municipality for almost 18 years and it continues to be very important in recruitment of doctors. The involvement of this committee has produced great success. We had a special program for high school students to participate in medical scenes called MEDQUEST. We in fact “grew our own” and have recently signed some new doctors who were raised in Brockton! A huge success.
