An infectious diseases expert at McGill University Health Centre says that he believes Canada, being a member state of the World Health Organization, has an obligation to declare a health emergency for monkeypox.
Dr. Don Vinh says that it should be done especially since monkeypox has been declared a public health emergency of international concern by the WHO.
According to reports, he says that such a declaration by Canada wouldn’t have to look like the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which was the most recent event to prompt a Canadian declaration of a health emergency.
Vinh says that it would trigger the deployment of additional resources to the places in Canada where the Monkeypox virus is spreading.
