A new walk event is being held in Owen Sound to raise funds and awareness for mental health services.
The 1st Annual Walk for Courage event is occurring on July 16.
The event came from the loss of 21-year-old Jeff Courage, a former Owen Sound resident, WHSS student, and staff member of Owen Sound Fitness and Training, who took his own life in 2019 while attending Western University.
Youth Awareness and Education Supervisor Jackie Ralph says in the notice, the walk was created to encourage all to take steps to a better tomorrow, and could include learning more about mental health and the resources available in the community by offering a chance to connect and check in on each other during a walk.
The walk will be fundraising for the CMHA mental health and addiction services in Grey Bruce to support its community funded programs, including youth awareness, training and education, The Men’s Program, Fresh Roots Cafe, and the brunch and garden programs.
The event starts at 9 a.m. with free registration, and the walk starts at 9:30 a.m.
The walk will follow pedestrian-friendly trails from Owen Sound Fitness and Training to the Bayshore Community Centre and back.
The event will end with walkers being invited to the front yard of Owen Sound Fitness and Training with music, games, refreshments, and offering a chance to spend more time connecting with others.
The walk is aiming to raise $5,000, and more information is available on the Walk for Courage website.
Josh Burnett of Owen Sound Fitness and Training was a guest with The Great Paul Hill on the 560 CFOS Morning Show and outlined the details for the event.
