Summer has officially arrived!
The summer solstice occurred at 5:14 a.m..
That’s when Earth arrives at the point in its orbit where the North Pole is at its maximum tilt toward the Sun, resulting in the longest day and shortest night of the calendar year.
And it’s definitely going to feel like summer, with a heat warning being issued for several areas.
Environment Canada says conditions will turn hot and humid for the next two days with daytime highs reaching the low to mid-30C and little relief overnight as temperatures dip slightly to the low 20s.
The weather agency warns the heat can result in deteriorating air quality, posing a risk for children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.
Pet owners are reminded never to leave their animals in a parked vehicle, even with the windows cracked open.
Cooler air should arrive by Thursday, but the daily high will still remain close to 30 right up until Saturday.
