Ameira Black is raising $20,000 to attend the 10th World Down Syndrome Swimming Championships in Albufeira, Portugal
Jennifer Black is hoping to raise enough money by October to help her daughter represent Canada at the 10th World Down Syndrome Swimming Championships, in Portugal.
Black’s daughter, Ameira, began swimming at five months old at the Goderich YMCA, and continues now at the age of sixteen.
She tells Country 104.9 News some friends noticed Ameira was a capable swimmer, and suggested she try out for Team Canada at this year’s Down Syndrome Swimming Championships.
“We didn’t realize Ameira was at that level,” Black says.
“She’s always swimming against able-bodied swimmers. So, to have somebody come up and say ‘no she’s good, and not only is she good, she could compete on the world stage,’ we were kind of flabbergasted.”
Black is now trying to raise $20 thousand to send Ameira to the international competition in Albufeira, Portugal this October.
“There is three of us travelling, and it’ll be close to three weeks we’re over there,” Black tells Country 104.9 News.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help fundraise for Ameira’s competition, as has raised over $3,900 as of publication.
