The province’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in, after an OPP officer shot a 30-year-old man with an Anti-Riot Weapon Enfield (ARWEN) in Gravenhurst.
The SIU says preliminary information suggests that just after midnight on Thursday, March 24, 2022, OPP officers attempted to arrest the man at a home in Severn Bridge as part of a drug trafficking investigation.
Police say officers spoke to the man to get him to exit the residence, but he refused and when they entered the home and the man was located, armed with a knife.
The OPP says one officer shot and struck the man with an ARWEN (rubber bullets), causing him to drop the knife, but he then went into medical distress due to a suspected drug overdose.
Officers administered Narcan to the man and he was arrested, after being released from the hospital.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online by clicking here.
