Ninety Five percent of Orillia households have complied with a new rule, mandating clear bags or rigid containers for garbage.
The program took effect on February 7 and appears to have nudged more people into separating their compostables from their garbage.
The weight of trash set out at the curb dropped by nearly 50 percent during the first week of the new program compared to the same period last year.
The weight of green box material increased by over 50 percent.
The initiative aims to encourage residents to sort recycling and compostable materials, and keep hazardous items out of the waste stream.
