OJHL Update
The Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) announced that the league’s regular season will resume on Feb. 1, 2022.
The OJHL Board of Governors today approved extending the end of the OJHL regular season to April 7, 2022 to allow for the rescheduling of all OJHL postponed games.
The OJHL season has been on pause since Jan. 5. The regular season was to end March 5.
“The OJHL Board of Governors were unanimously in favour of extending the OJHL regular season to allow for our players to play the full 54-game season,” said OJHL Commissioner Marty Savoy. “When the provincial government announced the shutdown, our teams immediately started the process with the league of rescheduling games in an effort to have as many scheduled once the league resumed play.”
A total of 125 OJHL regular season games have been postponed due to the Ontario government’s recent shutdown and OJHL COVID 19 protocols. Approximately 50 per cent of those games have already been rescheduled with the remaining games to be rescheduled within the next few weeks. The league will continue to update the league’s schedule on its website as rescheduled games are confirmed.
Ontario will begin easing COVID-19 public health restrictions Jan. 31, the government announced Thursday, That includes the return of youth sports. Hockey arenas will be open at 50-percent capacity or up to 500 people, whichever is less. Proof of vaccination and masking requirements will continue to remain in place where they already exist. All capacity limits on indoor spaces are scheduled to be lifted March 14.

UPDATE RE THE PORT ELGIN CHRYSLER ’22 ONTARIO TANKARD PRESENTED BY BRUCE POWER
The announcement by the province has put the Port Elgin Chrysler ’22 Ontario Tankard back on the calendar.
Spectators will be able to watch world class curling, however in a safe environment distinctly different from normal events.
The new regulations allow the event to proceed at 50% capacity, a crowd size appreciated by the curlers themselves and sufficient to make the event a success.
Players, spectators and officials will be required to observe stringent protocols and, amongst other changes, food and beverage will not be available in the arena. While food and beverage has always been a feature at Tankards, local restaurants will be open to 50% capacity as well, allowing visitors to patronise the many local establishments.
The event is being live streamed, broadcasting the Tankard and many of it’s sponsors to a wide local and international audience. Two games are being streamed each draw. To access you can go to CurlONTV.ca then click go live.
The host committee is excited to be back in business. Plans will be modified to accommodate the new scenario and regular updates will be provided to all stakeholders.
Local Minor Hockey Team Wins Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup Early Bird Grand Prize.
from Bob Richards
The Kincardine Kinucks U13 LL2 hockey team has won the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup Early Bird Grand Prize.
In early November 2021, Coach Bob Richards contacted Marina Wintemute & Tracy Primeau who were going to organize a used hockey equipment collection that would be eventually sent to Northern Indigenous Communities.
Marina is a local nurse who also spends time in places like Cross Lake and Pukatawagan Manitoba providing medical nursing services. She has seen firsthand the struggles that these communities have in getting children decent hockey gear. Tracy (Anishaabe-owe) is a retired Shift Manager from Bruce Power and is also a member of the Nippissing First Nations. Myself being a Metis and involved as a volunteer in hockey for almost 30yrs, I thought that this is a great cause that we could participate in.
The Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup is a national program/contest that encourages young hockey teams do a good deed no matter what it is. This year they have a new purpose. They would like everyone to rally together to make hockey more inclusive than ever. What a better way to make hockey inclusive than collect gear and send to those who could use it. I applied for the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup and was approved to submit an entry.
On Saturday December 5th, 2021, Marina and Tracy coordinated a drop off of gear at a local storage unit facility. I advertised this event on social media and then brought available players from my U13 team to assist in unloading vehicles of the gear that was being donated. The response from our small community was amazing – in 3hrs we filled an entire storage unit with hockey equipment. We are going to organize another drop off in early spring and then sort and clean the gear.
In this time, I took pictures and video to be combined into the 60 second video that would be submitted to the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup. Wow – who knew that making a 60 second video would take as long as it did. The video was submitted on December 30th, 2021.
On Monday January 17th, 2022, I was notified by the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup organizers that we have won the Early Bird Grand Prize for all of Canada. The early bird grand prize will have the Kincardine Kinucks LL2 team be filmed by Rogers SportsNet and eventually the footage will be used to introduce a Hockey Night in Canada broadcast. The date for this filming this segment in Kincardine has not been determined yet.
From there, all submitted videos for the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup will be reviewed by contest organizers and by using a graded approach, they will pick 12 Regional Finalist (1 for each province and 1 more for the combined 3 territories). Successful applicants will be announced on Rogers SportsNet during one of the Hockey Night in Canada programs. Selections will be made using the following criteria, i) demonstration of how the Good Deed brought inclusivity in the game of hockey, ii) showcase how the Good Deed could continue to support inclusivity in the community after the conclusion of the contest, iii) Showcase the team’s enthusiasm in the video, iv) clarity of the Good Deed. The Champion selection process will take place between February 26th, 2022, to March 19th, 2022. Residents of Canada will need to vote on www.chevroletgooddeedscup.ca for their favourite entry. The Champion will be awarded $100,000 do be donated to a charity of their choice. The remaining 11 Regional Finalist will be awarded $2000 to be awarded to a charity of their choice.
The charity that we chose is called First Assist out of Ottawa. This charity is run by former NHL player John Chabot who is also an Anishinabeg Algonquin from Kitigan Zibi First Nation. He works with Northern Indigenous Communities to provide on site education and sports integration programs to enhance the mental, emotional and physical well-being of youth in indigenous communities across Canada. We are also going to work together and figure out how to transport this hockey gear to the northern communities.
This entire process has been quite amazing. Having the young boys from my hockey team participate in this Good Deed will leave a lasting memory for them, not only by being featured on Rogers SportsNet, but by learning that sometimes doing the smallest, good deed, can make a big impact on those who are the recipients. Obviously, we would like to win the Championship, but if we don’t, we still did a Good Deed that we will remember forever.
