The Federal government is advising Canadians to avoid non-essential travel outside Canada.
The rapid spread of the Omicron Covid-19 variant is behind today’s travel advisory.
The Federal government will also increase testing capacity at the borders – these measures will be in place for four weeks and then be re-evaluated.
The current data shows a significant resurgence of COVID-19 infections in Canada, even without the Omicron variant.
Public Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos announced the travel advisory this afternoon.
“To those who were planning to travel, I say very clearly – now is not the time to travel,” he said.
Government officials say Canada must avoid overloading the hospital system at all costs.
