The eldest daughter of Nelson Mandela is hosting a virtual discussion in Collingwood today on the importance of equity, the power of cultural diversity, and opportunities for social change.
Dr. Makaziwe Mandela will deliver a free virtual presentation followed by a brief question and answer period beginning at 2:00 p.m. and community members are invited to participate in this powerful learning opportunity.
Dr. Mandela is the eldest daughter of Evelyn Mase and the late President, Nelson Mandela.
She received a Fulbright Foreign Scholarship and Fulbright Distinguished Fellowship Award to study at the University of Massachusetts for a Masters in Sociology and Doctorate in Anthropology. This was preceded by a BA degree in Social Work (Fort Hare University) and an Honours degree in Sociology (University in Natal).
Her studies, career and advocacy work have taken her around the world. Dr. Mandela is currently Chairperson of the House of Mandela a business she started with her daughter Tukwini Mandela and is the director of the House of Mandela Family Foundation. The Foundation works to improve the livelihoods of poor communities and globally advocate for social issues that affect African communities mainly social justice, advocacy, HIV and AIDS, education, health, agriculture, women empowerment and promoting alternate energy sectors.
Providing opportunities for learning and cultural awareness training has been an important focus for Town Council and staff to support equity and diversity, fundamental values for building inclusive services and community. Collectively, we all play a role in promoting respect and creating an inclusive environment which celebrates our diversity and nurtures belonging.
