Residents and visitors to Mary Lake or Port Sydney beach area are being cautioned about a confirmed blue-green algae bloom.
They often make the water look like green pea soup or turquoise paint.
The health unit says the ingestion of high levels of blue-green algae toxins have been associated with effects on the liver and nervous system in pets, livestock and people.
You should also be cautious about eating fish caught in water where blue-green algae blooms occur.
