Some signage is popping up at farms in parts of Huron County, saying farmers have “got it covered.”
The ‘We’ve Got it Covered!’ signs indicate that farm has planted cover crops (e.g., Clover; Radish; Ryegrass; Sunflower) earlier in the year, to prevent soil erosion.
Cover crops are crops which cover the soil in between cropping seasons, often planted after wheat and left in the ground over the winter.
Keeping the ground covered during this time helps reduce wind and water erosion during large storm events and snow melts.
The aim of the campaign is to recognize farmers who are making these efforts on their land, and to encourage others to think about how they could use cover crops in their operations.
Farmers interested in planting cover crops can contact their local cover crop seed supplier (www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/crops/resource/covercrp.htm), or contact a certified crop advisor.
