Tay Township and the OPP have launched a Community Watch Program.
The program was requested after a community member sought a solution for ongoing criminal activity in his neighbourhood and wanted to be a part of that solution.
Sergeant Avery Bassett of the OPP Community Safety Services section at OPP General Headquarters in Orillia who manages the Community Watch program was consulted. After a series of meetings with community members which began in August 2021 the green light was given from Tay Township who supported the implementation of the program.
The program has resulted in over 40 area residents joining together to become the eyes and ears of the community working together with the police to reduce the incidence of criminal activity. This has already shown positive results to stakeholders. Four Community Watch signs have been posted to act as a deterrent for potential criminals who may think twice when they enter the neighbourhood.
The key components to a successful Community Watch program are the “community support and commitment”, “the police” and the “township or municipality”. For more information, please view the following link – Community Mobilization and Engagement
Anyone having knowledge of criminal activity is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122, or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
