Owen Sound firefighters were kept busy Friday morning with a pair of unrelated calls in close succession prior to 9 a.m.
A fire department official says firefighters were dispatched to 291 9th Street East — the old post office building — for a report of heavy smoke on the third floor of apartment units.
Witnesses at the scene tell us an occupant of one unit was cooking and fell asleep, resulting in heavy smoke.
Residents in the building evacuated when the fire alarm went off.
No one was hurt.
Owen Sound firefighters ventilated the building and then residents were able to head back inside.
Not long after, at 8:34 a.m., firefighters were called to a shed on fire at a residential property in the area of 8th Avenue West.
A fire department official says one of the neighbours put a fire extinguisher to the flames before emergency crews arrived on scene. Firefighters knocked down the rest of the blaze with a water cannon when they arrived.
The cause of the shed fire is unknown at this point.
Owen Sound Police are investigating and the Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified.
