Great news this morning from Sudbury, where a group of 39 workers is being rescued, after being stuck underground at Vale’s Totten Mine for two days.
Officials hope to have everyone out of the mine between 11am-noon today.
Vale released a statement saying a scoop bucket that was being slung underground detached from the conveyance at Totten Mine on Sunday morning and is currently hung up in the shaft.
It says as a result, the conveyance (or so-called “bucket”) for transporting employees is unavailable.
The company says the 39 employees at Vale’s Totten mine are safe and started mobilizing to exit the underground mine last night.
There are no reports of injuries and the miners have had and continue to have access to water and food.
The rescue crew has been using a secondary egress ladder system to bring the people to the surface.
The mine produces copper, nickel and other precious metals.
