I’m beginning to wonder if anything ever goes straight ahead for lacrosse.
The last item I saw pertaining to the wobbling scenario of Owen Sound having a Major franchise was yet another block by a tiny Brampton group, albeit this time with the aid of the Ontario Lacrosse Association, that has further muddied the waters of the shift of the former Excelsiors operation to Owen Sound.
I found it interesting to read that the Brampton group heartily endorses giving Owen Sound an ” expansion franchise ” while they maintain operation of the Excelsiors.
I say let’s give the Brampton group, who have illustrated clearly they couldn’t operate a lemonade stand, the expansion franchise and watch how fast they run it into the ground.
I give the Brampton group credit though; they obviously can’t fund or operate a Major franchise, but when it comes to appeals, delays and blockages- they’re all stars.
Meanwhile, for quite some time the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation and the Owen Sound Junior B NorthStars had planned and prepared for a unique lacrosse event; a 4 team tournament with a festival atmosphere.
The concept certainly would have been a winner for all involved raising the profile of both the Junior Lacrosse program and the community of Cape Croker.
Unfortunately, and understandably, Chief Veronica Smith issued a notice last Friday that related the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation was extending their State of Emergency until September 30th.
As a result, all group activities, including the September 11th Lacrosse event, were wiped out.
You can imagine there’s disappointment in every corner, but this too is the reality of making plans followed by contingency plans in the era we now exist, leading to a reported shift of the 4 team tournament from Cape Croker to the town of Wiarton.
The Brampton to Owen Sound and the Cape Croker to Wiarton shuffles on the surface appear to be simplistic, but this is lacrosse where nothing ever seems to flow smoothly.
For Pete’s Auto Body, I’m Fred Wallace.
