Former Owen Sound Attack forward Andrew Shaw announced his retirment from the National Hockey League in April after doctors highly recommended he stop playing in order to care for his long-term health.
Shaw whose style of play with the Attack would best be described as rambunctious actually took up a few notches in the NHL.
However, that style of play for someone with Shaw’s build comes with a steep price and his retirement was prompted by a series of concussions, one which lasted more than a year.
And while it’s an unfortunate turn of events, I doubt there’s one ounce of regret.
When he was in Owen Sound, I’m told that on Attack school visits when quizzed by elementary students, he had a solid answer to the question of what he would do if hockey didn’t pan out.
His response was that he fully anticipated he’d work for Ontario Hydro out of Belleville in the same fashion his relatives did
I doubt that Andrew Shaw will get to Hydro, not after playing more than 500 NHL games for the Chicago Blackhawks & Montreal Canadiens.
Shaw scored 116 NHL goals and added 16 more in playoff action, highlighted by a triple overtime game winner for the Blackhawks in Game 1of the 2013 Stanley Cup Final against Boston……
