Through the years at hockey rinks I’ve encountered Gare Joyce while he was doing a feature article on an Ontario Hockey League player.
Recently, I saw a Facebook post in which he listed his favourite ballplayers during his lifetime position by position, naming 8 field position players, a Designated Hitter, plus right and lefthanded starters and relievers.
Gare’s list had Johnny Bench, Joey Votto, Joe Morgan, Mike Schmidt & Cal Ripken on the infield
Carl Yaztrzemski, Curt Flood and Roberto Clemente were in the outfield
Ron Blomberg was his DH.
And his pitchers were Denny McLain & Madison Bumgarner with Tom Henke & John Hiller coming out of the bullpen.
Playing along, I had 13 different ” favourites ”
Catcher Gary Carter with Dick Allen, Ryne Sandberg, George Brett & Allan Trammell on the infield
My outfield was Ron LeFlore, Robin Yount & Reggie Jackson.
The DH for my squad was Edgar Martinez
My pitchers were Bob Gibson & Steve Carlton and the relievers were Rollie Fingers and Sparky Lyle.
I wonder if we fed our teams into a computer, who would win ?
