Dangerous heat is in the forecast this week, as humidex values push, reach or even exceed 40 degrees Celsius.
The Weather Network’s Melinda Singh says the week ahead could be the hottest of the summer so far in southern Ontario, with the heat and humidity lasting for several days.
It says the threat for severe storms returns today, with the potential focused on an area stretching north of the GTA to cottage country and eastern areas, spilling over into western Quebec, as well.
When planning for this week, people should expect to have to limit outdoor activities and make active preparations to keep cool.
Today’s forecast for Simcoe-Muskoka calls for a mix of sun and cloud with a chance of showers late this afternoon and the risk of a thunderstorm. High 31. Humidex 39.
During a heat event, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says the risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.
- Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions
- Check on older family, friends and neighbours. Make sure they are cool and drinking water
- Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle
Also consider these tips to staying cool including eating spicy foods, taking vitamins, stay in the shade, consider hot over cold drinks, and avoid dark clothing.
