Meaford council has approved a tender of over $300,000 for the rehabilitation of the Bayfield Street shoreline.
A report from Chief Administrative Officer Rob Armstrong notes the tender is being awarded to Naturally Green Landscaping Ltd. to help with the damages sustained to the shoreline in 2020.
The work Naturally Green Landscaping will be performing is the removal of the Armourstone Wall.
To help subsidize the costs, a transfer of over $200,000 from the General Infrastructure Reserve Funding is needed.
In 2021, the municipality received a grant of $100,000 from the government to assist with repairs to the shoreline which was seeing erosion due to high water levels.
To assess the damage, Tatham Engineering was brought on to provide a coastal review of the shoreline between the Meaford Museum and Fred Raper Park, identifying and recommending the highest priority areas.
Among those priority areas are 100 meters of shoreline between the museum and cannon, which faced significant damage, providing a great threat to local infrastructure.
The total cost for the work to restore the shoreline are estimated at more than $750,000.
The 2021 budget does not include funding for this project, but it was deemed an emergency purchases given the damages.
Despite the $100,000 assistance from the Covid-19 Grant provided by the government, the project will still face a deficit of more than $200,000.
The project will begin in September to coincide with the ongoing detour in place for the Sykes Street project.
It’s expected to be finished no later than Nov. 1.
