Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, an apprenticeship program continued to support high school students in Huron and Perth counties.
The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) allows students to begin their apprenticeship hours for a trades position while they are in high school.
The Avon Maitland District School Board says 44 students achieved a registered training agreement and had started their apprenticeship during their grade 12 year in 2020-2021.
According to OYAP officials, there were a variety of trades that students pursued an apprenticeship in this year.
They include plumber, automotive service technician, welder, electrician, truck and coach technician, industrial millwright, agricultural equipment technician, residential air conditioning systems mechanic, brick and stone mason, sheet metal worker, general machinist, metal fabricator, and hairstylist.
