The crackdown on gun violence continues in Canada.
Today PM Justin Trudeau said starting July 7th when someone applies for a firearms license, the background check will cover the person’s whole life, not just the last five years.
“Other regulations tabled in Parliament yesterday make it a legal requirement for retailers to properly verify a buyers’ license before making a sale and to retain inventory and sales records for all firearms including non-restricted ones,” he said.
The government is also strengthening oversight on how guns are transported.
Trudeau says in the last few days alone we’ve seen heartbreaking gun violence in Canadian cities.
He says no child should be caught in the crossfire and no community should be torn apart by tragedy
In 2019, Trudeau says firearms were used in 40 percent of murders in Canada and he says it’s known that the presence of firearms at home can increase the risk of suicide and femicide.
Trudeau says the new measures will help save lives.
