Sting News Conference
The Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League have a news conference scheduled for 11 am this morning
It’s anticipated Sting General Manager Dylan Seca will introduce former Owen Sound Attack coach Al Letang as the new Head Coach in Sarnia.
Letang was with the Attack organization for a year & a half as an assistant coach and then took over as head coach of the the club midway through the 2018-19 season.
As Head Coach in Owen Sound, Letang posted 34 wins and is 10th all time on the coaching victory list with the franchise.
Last week, Letang stepped down as Attack Head Coach citing a desire to be closer to his home and family in Sarnia.
With the coaching vacancy in Owen Sound, two names have quickly surfaced as frontrunners for the position; Daniel Tkaczuk or Dave Barr.
According to one source, Tkaczuk who previously was a skills coach with the Attack is the favorite.
However, the source also suggests movement at the NHL level may dictate what Owen Sound does or doesn’t do.
Reports out of Phoenix suggest that former Kitchener Rangers coach Mike Van Ryn is among the candidates for the vacant coaching position with the Coyotes. The source relates that if Van Ryn is successful in landing the job in Arizona he will bring Tkaczuk with him.
Barr a former NHL’er has been coaching at various levels for almost 30 years, a period that included a lengthy tenure as coach & General Manager of the Guelph Storm in the OHL.
Most recently, Barr was the head coach for Canada’s Under 18 team which won the Gold Medal last month in Texas
Among the other coaching rumours circulating in the OHL, it’s believed former Kitchener coach Jay McKee will join the Hamilton Bulldogs and in Oshawa, a combination of Eric Wellwood & Kurtis Foster is being projected.
Barlow Signs
Forward Colby Barlow has signed a standard player agreement with the Owen Sound Attack.
Barlow, who is from Orillia, played most recently for the Toronto Marlies Minor Hockey organization.
On June 4th, the Attack took Barlow with the 8th overall pick in the Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection.
Attack Release
The Owen Sound Attack are excited to announce that they have signed 2021 OHL Priority Selection first round pick Colby Barlow to a standard player agreement.
“It feels surreal, it’s something I’ve been working towards my whole life and to be able to official sign is a dream come true” said Barlow when asked about how it feels to sign his player agreement with the Attack.
The native of Orillia, Ontario is very excited to get started and see what being a member of the Attack organization is all about.
“I can’t wait to get to Owen Sound and meet everyone in the organization face to face” said Barlow. “I’m really excited to meet the group of guys I’ll be playing with, I have heard nothing but great things.”
“I just can’t wait to meet and experience all of Owen Sound, it’s amazing community and fanbase” added Barlow.
Barlow, a native of Orillia, Ontario, played his minor hockey for the Toronto Marlboros in the Greater Toronto Hockey League. Even with limited action and training difficulties, the six-foot-one centreman has continued to get bigger, stronger and has further improved his skills, which should allow him to have an immediate impact.
Attack General Manager Dale DeGray is very excited to see what his eighth overall can bring to the organization.
“We are very fortunate to have had the opportunity to draft Colby” said DeGray. “Having the ability to add a player of his calibre is very exciting. We would like to welcome Colby and his family to the Attack organization and look forward to seeing him hit the ice in late August.”
Barlow wanted to share a special message to the Attack fan base.
“Attack fans, I can’t wait to see you and feel your support on a daily basis. I’m so excited to meet you all and play in-front of you. GO ATTACK GO!” said Barlow.
CHL Import Draft Selection Order
The Canadian Hockey League today announced the Order of Selections for the 2021 CHL Import Draft to be held online Wednesday, June 30 at 11 a.m. Eastern.
The QMJHL’s Baie-Comeau Drakkar will select first overall after completing the 2020-21 season with an 8-26-1-1 record and 18 points in 36 games.
Baie-Comeau passed on both of its selections in last year’s Import Draft, opting to retain its two selections from the prior class that counted Belarusian right-wing Valentin Demchenko and Latvian left-wing and Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Raivis Kristians Ansons. After wrapping up 2019-20 with 34 points in 57 games, Demchenko played overseas this past season due to pandemic challenges, while Ansons joined the club in late February before putting up six points in nine games, building on a successful first season in which he collected 35 points in 60 games.
The WHL’s Everett Silvertips will select second overall after winning an equal-odds lottery to determine the league’s order of selection following its abbreviated 2020-21 season.
Like the Drakkar, the Silvertips passed on both of their selections in the 2020 CHL Import Draft, and instead opted to retain 2019 selection Michal Gut, a Czech-born centre who put together an impressive first season in 2019-20 that counted 13 goals and 23 assists for 36 points in 51 games before returning to the Czech Republic on loan for the 2020-21 campaign. Additionally, the Silvertips also retained Slovakian left-wing Martin Fasko-Rudas. Through his first two seasons with the club, the budding forward notched 46 points in 130 games then added eight points in 17 games to begin the 2019-20 season before later shifting to the Saskatoon Blades.
The OHL’s Barrie Colts will select third overall in the 2021 CHL Import Draft. Ontario Hockey League clubs will draft in inverse order of the lottery results drawn to determine the selection order for the 2021 OHL Priority Selection. The Colts held the last pick of the first round of the 2021 OHL Priority Selection.
The Colts made two selections in the 2020 CHL Import Draft, first choosing Czech-born centre Stanislav Vrhel before adding Belarusian right-wing Alexander Palchik in the second round. Both players competed overseas in 2020-21 with the OHL unable to Return to Play. During the 2019-20 campaign, Barrie deployed Latvian-born netminder and Vancouver Canucks prospect Arturs Silovs who posted a 16-13-2-2 record with a .891 save percentage and 3.87 goals-against average across 36 appearances in addition to Czech-born left-wing and Buffalo Sabres prospect Matej Pekar who posted 29 points counting 16 goals and 13 assists through 26 games before later joining the Sudbury Wolves.
Last year, the North Bay Battalion chose first overall in the 2020 CHL Import Draft, selecting Russian right-wing Matvei Petrov, followed by Czech-born goaltender and Detroit Red Wings prospect Jan Bednar’s second-overall selection by the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, and Slovakian-born defenceman Oliver Fatul at third overall to the Swift Current Broncos.
