Attack Release
The Owen Sound Attack made good use of their two selections at the 2021 Ontario Hockey League Under-18 Priority Selection on Wednesday, selecting a forward and defenceman. The Attack used their 11th overall pick to take right winger Zennon Edwards, while using their 30th overall pick to take defenceman Ty Higgins.
Round 1 (11th Overall): Zennon Edwards
Zennon Edwards is a five-foot-nine-inch, 165-pound right winger out of the Whitby Wildcats U18 AAA program. As a minor midget player, the native of Whitby, Ontario had 25 goals and 17 assists in 35 regular season game in 2019-20.
“Zennon is a competitive skilled forward with a nice ability around the net” said Attack Head Scout and Director of Player Development Sean Lafortune. “He has gained a lot of strength and sprouted seven inches over the past year which will make it easier for him to compete at the major junior level.”
Round 2 (30th Overall): Ty Higgins
Higgins is a five-foot-eight-inch, 157-pound right handed defenceman out of the Waterloo Wolves U18 AAA program. As a minor midget player, the native of Shakespeare, Ontario had eight goals and 12 assists in 33 regular season games in 2019-20.
“Ty is a smart puck moving defender who made some nice gains over the last 12-months” said Lafortune. “He got bigger, stronger and harder to play against, all things that will allow him to be more successful at the major junior level.”
The use of the under-18 draft is an area of pride for the Attack organization, whom continues to utilize the draft to build its team.
“Since its inception we have utilized this draft to add depth throughout the organization and we have done so again today with the selection of Zennon and Ty” said Attack General Manager Dale DeGray. “Both players will definitely bring that added depth with Zennon being a skilled quick forward and Ty being a steady puck mover with some grit on the backend. We would like to welcome both players to the Attack organization.”
Attack at the Draft coverage is presented by Bumstead Insurance and Financial. Up next for the Attack brass is the CHL Import Draft which will take place on Wednesday, June 30th beginning at 11a.m. Follow the Attacks social media feeds and visit attackhockey.com for updates.
OHL Release
The Ontario Hockey League today conducted the fifth annual OHL Under-18 Priority Selection for U18 AAA hockey players in Ontario.
The annual Under-18 Priority Selection was held entirely online, adhering to all government and public health COVID-19 physical distancing guidelines at both the League and member team levels. This year’s unique approach to a very special day was conducted in the interest of ensuring the health and safety of prospects, their families as well as OHL member team and League personnel.
Eligibility for the 2021 OHL Under-18 Priority Selection included all U18 players (2003 and 2004 birth years) not currently on an OHL Member Team Protected List who were carded with an Ontario based U18 AAA Hockey Club within the Ontario Hockey Federation, Hockey Eastern Ontario or Hockey Northwestern Ontario in the current season.
A total of 50 players were selected from 34 different teams and included 21 forwards, 19 defencemen and 10 goaltenders. 49 of the 50 players selected were born in 2004.
“Congratulations to all 50 players selected today,” said OHL Director of Player Recruitment Kyle Pereira. “It’s an exciting day for players, family members, coaches and teammates to celebrate perseverance through a trying season that had its share of challenges for everyone. The Under-18 Priority Selection has provided the OHL with a number of quality players since its inception in 2017, and it presents another opportunity for prospects to further their development and showcase themselves in an effort to become the best player they can be.”
Winners of the Under-18 Priority Selection Draft Lottery back on May 5, the London Knights used the first overall pick to select centreman Abakar Kazbekov from the Mississauga Senators U18 program. A 6-foot-1, 177Ib. left-shot originally hailing from Russia before spending his 2019-20 campaign with the Vaughan Kings U16 team, Kazbekov becomes the Knights’ highest-selected player in the five-year history of the event. The Saginaw Spirit followed-up with the selection of Soo Jr. Greyhounds winger Calem Mangone before the Soo Greyhounds rounded-out the top three adding Whitby Wildcats right-winger James Johnson.
All OHL member teams were required to draft a minimum of two players, however to enhance opportunities specifically for goaltenders, clubs selecting a goaltender with one of their selections had the option to select another player (skater only) in a third round.
The Greater Toronto Hockey League and Ontario Minor Hockey Association produced 15 selections each followed by the Minor Hockey Alliance of Ontario with 12, Hockey Eastern Ontario with five and the Northern Ontario Hockey Association with three. The Mississauga Reps and Whitby Wildcats led all teams with four players selected.
The OHL Under-18 Priority Selection was conducted in partnership with RinkNet as picks were submitted online by OHL member clubs and displayed in real time at ontariohockeyleague.com. The selections were also streamed live on the OHL’s YouTube channel.
Announced in January 2017, the concept of the OHL Under-18 Priority Selection was developed with full support from Hockey Canada’s three Ontario Branches including the Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF), Hockey Eastern Ontario (HEO), and Hockey Northwestern Ontario (HNO).
