Meaford is starting the demolition of a building today in preparation of the property becoming a municipal parking lot.
Located at 28 Nelson Street West, formerly Smith‘s Tire Service, this follows council‘s decision in 2019 to purchase the property to use as an additional parking lot in the downtown area.
The purchase was funded through a combination of Development Charges and the 2019 surplus.
Municipal staff estimate the lot will be able to feature 35 to 40 parking spaces.
Meaford Manager of Strategic Initiatives Janet Sperling, notes having parking available is essential to supporting downtown businesses.
“Following the demolition, we anticipate the parking lot will be well used by visitors to the downtown,” says Sperling.
