A new Regional Broadband Strategy to expand and improve broadband connectivity across Muskoka is in the works.
A Request for Proposals (RFP) has already been issued by the District to hire a consultant to explore Muskoka’s unique connectivity challenges, confirm the needs and interests of businesses and residents both year-round and seasonal and create a plan to meet future connectivity and infrastructure requirements across Muskoka.
The Muskoka Economic Recovery Task Force (MERTF) was established by District Council last summer to explore ways to help Muskoka’s economy to recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Broadband connectivity was identified as a key barrier to recovery and a sub-committee was formed to address the issue. The Broadband Sub-committee consists of community economic development stakeholders, District staff, and Council representatives. The group has been gathering broadband data over the last several months that will feed into the development of the strategy.
“The goal is to do everything possible to ensure that affordable and reliable internet services are available across the region, so that residents and businesses can fully participate and stay competitive in an ever-growing digital world,” says John Klinck, District Chair and member of the Broadband Subcommittee. “The Strategy will provide us with a solid plan forward and ensure we are maximizing the time and resources available. It is critical we do all that we can to help connect underserved residents and businesses in Muskoka.”
“Expanding access to broadband internet is a complex endeavor with many players and possible paths, which can make it very challenging to navigate,” adds District CAO, Julie Stevens. “Local government can play a critical role in expanding connectivity in their communities, so it is important we work collaboratively with our Area Municipalities and other partners to address these challenges together. This will help us find the best approach to meet the growing and future needs for all of Muskoka.”
