It’s Emergency Preparedness Week.
Residents are being reminded about the importance of preparing themselves and their families for a wide-range of potential emergency situations.
EP Week is a federal-provincial-municipal initiative to promote emergency preparedness across Canada.
While the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect our region, it does not diminish our susceptibility to other annual weather events such as flooding or our predisposition to high winds and tornadoes.
EP Week aims to remind residents that our region experiences environmental events every year. To be prepared for all eventualities, residents should know the risks in your area, make emergency plans for you and your family and put together an emergency kit.
Four steps to be prepared:
-
Know the Risks
Learn what hazards exist in your area. -
Make a Plan
Prepare emergency plans so you and your family will know how to communicate, what to do and where to go in the event of an emergency. -
Prepare a Kit
Gather the supplies you will need if an emergency occurs. Prepare a kit for your home, workplace and car. -
Know What to Do
Take a first aid and CPR course. Learn how to protect your family, you and your home in specific emergencies.
In a disaster, first responders and emergency workers focus their initial efforts on helping people who need immediate, urgent assistance.
As a result, if your neighbourhood is not in immediate danger, it may take time for workers to clear roads and restore utilities to your area. Therefore, all residents should make plans to be as self-sufficient as possible for at least 72 hours.
