Collingwood council is considering whether to put a pause on new development, while the town figures out how it’s going to meet future demand for water.
Council will meet Monday to consider an interim control by-law.
It will restrict projects that do not already have a building permit submitted. Projects that don’t use more water, like renovations on a house, will be allowed to continue. A news release says the town’s water treatment plant can handle current needs — but won’t be able to meet demand if the current pace of growth continues.
There is an water plant expansion in the works, but it may take until 2025 to get up and running. Since 2001, Collingwood’s population has increased by more than 50 percent, much of that in the past 5 years.
