Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire ” proudly sponsored by Pete’s Auto Body.

The Masters, the first major of the golf season, begins tomorrow.
Unfortunately. the storied tournament on the fabled course at Augusta, Georgia, a sporting event that means so much to so many golf fans will be contested against the backdrop of the new Georgia elections law, a law which prompted lawsuits from civil rights groups, a sharp denunciation from President Joe Biden, and calls for businesses, including the PGA, to take action against the state.
Rightly or wrongly, the mix of sport and politics this weekend will be a topic if not an ongoing distraction.
Jordan Spieth snapped a 4 year winless drought last weekend winning the PGA Texas Open and has momentum coming in. That would be a good story line.
Dustin Johnson won the 2020 Masters, staged much later in the year, and did so with a record score of 268, which was 20-under-par. Can he follow up ? Again, another great plot line to follow.
And 3 Canadians; Corey Conners, Mackenzie Hughes & Mike Weir are in the field and will be of interest to golf fans to the north of Augusta.
Weir won the prestigious championship in 2003, the only Canadian to ever do so.
And Conners who was 10th at the Masters last year, has been extremely good in most of his 6 starts to this point, pocketing in excess of $ 1.4 million dollars.
The Masters is a significant event not only on the golf calendar but on the sports-in-general calendar and the hope here is that golf and NOT American politics will be the primary talking point tomorrow through Sunday night.
