OHL Board of Governors Meet
The Ontario Hockey League Board of Governors had a 20 minute session yesterday.
No specific details on a Return To Play package or date were given to the Governors.
The OHL, which has been idle since last March, continues to work with the Province & Health Authorities to establish protocols for a potential Return to Play this Spring.
Owen Sound Attack Governor Peter MacDermid relates the group is expected to meet again in the short term
Meanwhile, Ontario Sport Minister Lisa MacLeod announced more than $ 2 million for the OHL’s post-secondary scholarships for athletes on 17 Ontario-based teams.
MacLeod says she’s “optimistic” that the Ontario Hockey League Return to Play plan will be announced by the end of the month.
OHL Release
The Ontario Hockey League is exceptionally proud of its player experience, the hallmark of which is the OHL Scholarship Program, which is the leading scholarship program in amateur sport.
Earlier today, Ontario Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Lisa MacLeod announced that the Government of Ontario will be providing $2.35 million in support of the OHL Scholarship Program.
During the 2019-20 academic year there were 334 OHL graduates accessing their scholarship at a cost to OHL member teams of $3.125 million. Of these 334 graduates, 200 were included on U SPORTS men’s hockey rosters. In addition, current OHL players accessed a total of $475,000 in member team scholarship contributions.
The OHL and its member teams continue to honour scholarship commitments to all players throughout the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
“Minister MacLeod’s announcement today recognizes the importance of this program to our players and their families,” said OHL Commissioner David Branch. “It will help address the substantial cost of the Scholarship Program to OHL teams, who have not been on the ice since March 2020.
“Getting players back on the ice as quickly as possible continues to be our main priority and we will continue to work diligently with the Government to ensure a safe return to play this season. We look forward to Minister MacLeod’s announcement on the matter of returning to play along with details on further financial aid for the League.”

Deal
The Owen Sound Major Lacrosse franchise has swung a deal with the Peterborough Lakers in advance of the MSL Entry Draft tonight.
The newly located Owen Sound franchise has sent their 2nd round selection in the 2023 draft to Peterborough.
In exchange, Owen Sound will receive two 3rd round picks for the MSL Draft.
Through the transaction, Owen Sound gets pick # 14 which Peterborough had acquired previously from Cobourg, along Peterborough’s 3rd round selection, which is the 18th overall pick.
Owen Sound General Manager Steve McCarthy says the addition of the draft picks will give the club some flexibility to address specific needs or target a local player.
The Major Series Lacrosse Draft is tonight at 7 pm
OLA Free Agent Ruling
The Owen Sound Major franchise was dealt a setback yesterday when the Ontario Lacrosse Association decreed that 4 players, including top scorer Jeff Teat, were free agents.
The ruling was based on non-payment of affiliate team compensation for the 4 players involved
In 2019, Teat scored 36 times for the now defunct Brampton Excelsiors
Along with Teat, Clarke Patterson, Connor McLelland & Travis Burton are all able to play where they choose.
In 2019, those 4 players accounted for 141 scoring points for the now defunct Brampton Excelsiors.
