2022 Ontario Tankard To Be Hosted at Saugeen Shores
It appears 2022 is going to be a banner year for curling in Saugeen Shores.
Saugeen Shores Committee of the Whole learned that a committee from the Port Elgin Curling Club is already working on the event, scheduled for February 6th to 13th, 2022.
Committee member Doug Flowers says success at running the tankard could mean more curling events in the future.
Flowers says besides the tankard, the club’s annual SuperSpiel is going to become a sponsored world curling tour event.
It could put them in the position to attract nationally televised events in the future such as a Grand Slam of Curling event; the Canadian Juniors and the World Juniors.
It’s early but they estimate they will get 1,000 spectators a day during the eight-team, seven-round-robin event.
Mayor Luke Charbonneau says it will be an opportunity for the community to see high calibre curlers in a competitive setting.
The economic impact to the municipality during the week-long event is estimated between $700,000 and one million dollars.
The official Tankard launch will be held at the Port Elgin Curling Club on Saturday, February 27th at a time to be announced later this week.
The Ontario Tankard is the Southern Ontario Provincial Championship for men’s curling.
The winner represents Team Ontario at the Tim Hortons Brier.
