Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire ” proudly sponsored by Pete’s Auto Body.
Pete’s Auto Body; because we care about our community……
Some of the toughest, most grinding, enjoyable & memorable days I’ve spent were in Kincardine at the Davidson Centre track & field complex.
Bluewater West Elementary, Bluewater Secondary Schools and once the CWOSSA Track & Field Championships were all conducted at that site.
In most cases, the conductor was Earl Farrell, who roamed the infield of the track and quietly seemed to orchestrate every competition and every shift from station to station as the day progressed.
Earl passed away 2 years ago, but the enduring images of his time as an educator, and especially as a track, coach will exist for generations.
Earl’s wife Geordie, forgive me for saying this, is rapidly approaching a milestone birthday.
Coincidentally, on March 20th, she plans to cycle 70 kilometres on her indoor trainer and is inviting others to join the activity in any way, shape or form they chose.
There is a fundraising element to the process, which will fittingly support the Earl Farrell Endowment Fund with the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation.
For information on the fund visit smhfoundation.ca/earlfarrell.
Currently the fund is in excess of $ 10,000 and the desire is to bump the fund to a level that will create an annual disbursement of interest that will furnish items to aid mental and emotional needs of those recovering; for example, TV sets, Internet or art in the hospital rooms.
That may sound simple, but when you’re being treated or recovering in hospital, it’s invaluable, just like Earl himself.
To the outsider, they may have wondered who the guy on the infield at Kincardine was, but to those connected to the events at Kincardine, they valued every second of Earl Farrell’s contributions
For Pete’s Auto Body, I’m Fred Wallace
