Barrie Transit’s Route 11 is being discontinued.
The city says its last run will take place on Saturday, when it will be replaced with the Transit ON Demand service model.
The decision was made since the route has relatively low ridership, making it the ideal area for Transit ON Demand, which optimizes bus schedules in real-time based on rider trip requests via a free mobile app.
Route 11 was launched in 2016 to connect the Lockhart subdivision and Saunder’s Road employment areas with the Park Place Transit Hub.
The city says prior to the pandemic, route 11 was operating with an average of 5 passengers boarding per hour.
The cost of providing Transit ON Demand is equal to the cost of conventional service, but can cover more area, resulting in a more efficient service for Barrie.
“Transit ON Demand provides a more cost-effective service for Barrie Transit and a better level of service for transit riders in low ridership areas, says Brent Forsyth, Director of Transit. “An on-demand transit service offers many potential future benefits for Barrie’s residents.”
