The City of Barrie has joined a province-wide monitoring program, testing wastewater for COVID 19.
Studies have shown that people with active infections shed the virus in their stool, even when they have no symptoms.
The city says regular sampling of wastewater at the sewage treatment plant will show whether the number of infected people is increasing, decreasing, or staying the same.
The monitoring can also determine the presence of variants of the virus.
