Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “.
I watched ” Tiger “, the CRAVE documentary on golfer Tiger Woods recently and came to the realization afterwards there’s NO way you can capsulate the presentation in this time slot.
In fact, based on the segments over the 2 part series, no one may ever be able to accurately portray Woods.
There’s Woods the golfer, in some eyes, the greatest of all time and certainly as dominant as any player has been in a specific era.
There’s Woods the child, who maybe never really got the chance to be anything as a child other than a golfer under the guidance of his father, Earl and the ruling hand of his mother ” Tida ”
There’s Woods the college student, a bit of a loner yet someone the world knew plenty about in that time frame.
There’s Woods the businessman whose carefully constructed image and brand was squeaky clean until his eyes, and later his hands and body started to wander
The beauty of this documentary is that it attempts to touch all the bases and as a result you have conflicting emotions throughout.
As it pertains to Tiger and his father, Earl, I wavered, sometimes admiring them, sometimes shaking my head.
In terms of Elin, Tiger’s wife, and caddy Steve Williams I felt disappointed about the events that severed their respective relationships with Woods.
Strangely, I didn’t despise Rachel Uchitel, the most prominent of the mistresses. I wanted to for her involvement in the sordid affair, but her honesty and genuine care for Woods stood out in this piece.
By comparison, I found myself yelling at the TV when the former National Enquirer editor,a gleeful goof was on screen, and later felt utter contempt for Augusta National Golf chairman Billy Payne and his condescending and public criticism of Woods.
And with all of that, I’m barely scratching the surface.
It’s rare for me to recommend anything on TV, but ” Tiger ” is a terrific documentary that will touch almost every emotional base you have whether you like golf, whether you like Tiger Woods, or not.
I’m Fred Wallace
