Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire ”
About a month ago, I was at The Meaford Hall for one of their movie days and saw ” Serendipity “, a personal favorite, on the BIG screen.
And as enjoyable as the movie and the day was, I was also struck by the coincidence that the film was shown on a Thursday.
For most of the last decade, Thursdays during the Fall and Winter months have been spent at the Meaford & St Vincent Community Centre, home of the Knights of Meaford and the Greater Metro Junior Hockey League.
Last week, the Knights formally announced they have shut down for the hockey season.
The decision by the executive was somewhat elementary and had very little to do with the Knights operation, but rather was yet another sporting casualty of a global pandemic.
The Knights organization was firmly in place for the hockey season at every level of the operation, on the ice & off.
The Meaford club has always been solidly supported by the business community and the residents of the town.
And on the ice, the Knights conducted a 7 week skate and training session from early November into the Christmas Break.
But with absolutely no guarantee of when, or if, there would be a Greater Metro Junior Hockey League this year and factoring in the costs associated with operating the Knights, the decision to cease for the season was virtually made for the Knights.
However, that doesn’t mean the club will be idle.
As we speak, the wheels of recruitment are rolling.
The Knights fully intend to return to the GMHL once government and health officials deem it to be safe and appropriate, thus, my Thursdays in Meaford in the future will be hockey nights rather than movie nights.
I’m Fred Wallace
