The Mayor of Ramara Township has launched a campaign for the Conservative Party nomination in Simcoe North.
Basil Clarke is also a farmer and Simcoe Councillor with 20 years of political experience.
He’s lived in Simcoe North his entire life and bought his family’s farm, which was established in 1840, from his father in 1987.
“Carey, my wife of 31 years and myself have operated a retail store in downtown Orillia for 13 years,” he says. “We are the proud parents of 3 grown children. Our eldest is married with our 1st grandchild and another on the way in April.”
Clarke says he’s running to ensure his grandchildren have the same opportunities he and his wife Carey had and so they won’t be buried with Canada’s Federal debt.
Clarke says the riding is made up of small communities that rely heavily on small business, tourism and agriculture to be sustainable.
He says the rural riding has also been hit hard by what he calls “Prime Minister Trudeau’s aggressive crackdown” on law-abiding gun owners and it’s these kinds of challenges he plans to fight for Simcoe North on in Ottawa.
“If Covid-19 has taught us anything, it is that Canada needs to be more self-sufficient and far less reliant on other countries, especially Communist China,” he states in a release. “Post-Covid and after the next election which could come at any time, our new MP will not have time to learn the ropes regarding what is important to small businesses and the farming community, which are the backbone of Simcoe North. We need a candidate who already understands these industries, and who can navigate the local political environment.”
Clarke has won six consecutive elections which brought him from Ramara Township Council to the Office of the Mayor.
“Having served constituents of my own since 2000, I know who to call and how to get things done,” he adds. “I am ready to hit the ground running as we rebuild local economies and our great country. I have been a fiscal conservative my entire life and have proudly participated in our local Conservative movement for years. These are the reasons why I feel that I am the best choice for the Simcoe North Conservative nomination, and hopefully, as your next MP.”
