A British grandma has become the first in the world today to get the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, outside of a trial.
Margaret Keenan received the vaccine at her local hospital in Coventry, central England this morning, just a week before she turns 91 years old.
Britain began rolling out the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech this morning, becoming the first Western country to start vaccinating its general population against the virus.
Public health officials have dubbed it “V-Day.”
Keenan said, “It’s the best early birthday present I could wish for because it means I can finally look forward to spending time with my family and friends in the New Year after being on my own for most of the year.”
The U.K. became the first country to authorize the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine for emergency use last week.
In trials, the vaccine was shown to have around 95% efficacy.
